Abstract:Faced with the requirements to take back what they make, companies are redesigning process and rethinking products. Investigating the German example, the article shows that the task of making recycling work is falling to individual companies, not local authorities. Germany's packaging ordinance is the most ambitious environmental legislation any nation has ever attempted. Europe's auto manufacturers are thinking about how to recycle used car parts. Tetra Pak argues that waste reduction, not recycling, is the solution.
