Abstract:Apple Computer, once the hip flagbearer of high tech, is in sad decline. There are lessons aplenty. In 1984, a single 60-second commercial crystallized the phenomenon that was Apple. Apple's well oiled image-making machine captured collective imagination. Today, the Apple - the very icon of a post-industrial high-tech America - is barely recognizable in the troubled $11 billion company that bears the name. Microsoft Corp.'s Windows 95 has seriously eroded the Mac's technology edge. Now, management is in near meltdown. Apple is rapidly becoming a minor player in the computer business.
