Abstract:The incidence of employee fraud appears to be growing. Executives and directors with stewardship responsibility are concerned about the adverse publicity and embarrassment fraud incidents can bring to their firms, not to mention the high costs of investigation and recovery. In this first of a two-part series, the author looks at the issue of prevention. Managers need to understand what motivates an employee to commit fraud, how they rationalize it and what the company may be doing to provide the opportunity for fraud.
