Abstract:Deregulation or liberalisation has recently become a buzz word in taiwan. The reason is obvious. First, we have been workding hard in the past couple of years for the accession to the WTO/GATT. Secondly, our government is currently pressing ahead with the plan to build Taiwan into a regional operations centre (ROC) or a business hub. This high tide of liberalisation is drawing attention from the region, if not the world. Many people from abroad are keen to have a close look at this trend. Nevertheless, to review the experience of Taiwan's development in the past will enable us to have a better understanding of its liberalisation at present.
