Forecasts are to year 2002. Italy has highest per capita consumption of pasta in Europe, indicating little scope for volume growth. The value of pasta market amounted to L2,675 billion in 1995, having fallen by 30.7% over the same period in nominal terms. Barilla dominates the Italian pasta market with 41.2% of value sales in 1997. Discounters rapidly penetrated the market, achieving 17.6% of pasta volumes retailed in 1997. The pasta market is predicted to fall in constant value terms by 13.7% during the forecast period.
