Abstract:Svenska Handelsbanken and ABN Amro and its subsidiary Alfred Berg are major players in regional expansion and integration of financial services in the Nordic countries. Swedish bank Svenska Handelsbanken is known in the market for an expansion strategy that avoids full mergers. The key word at Handelsbanken is universal: It wants to cover financial services from corporate transactions to basic retail and consumer banking, life assurance, investment banking and trading. ABN Amro / Alfred Berg: Nordic power with a global reach. Many market participants in the Nordic region expect that mergers will not only cross borders but also stretch into other regions. For the most part, the second possibility remains speculation. The notable exception has been Dutch bank ABN Amro's acquisition of Stockholm-based brokerage Alfred Berg.
