Abstract:The paper examines which firms finance themeselves through intermediaries and which borrow directly from arms' length investors. Large companies with abundant cash and collateral tap credit markets directly. Determinants of lender selection sharpen during investment downturns and there are substantial asymmetries in the way companies enter and exit capital markets.
