Abstract:In farming the use of fire has some benefits: the farmers use fire in the land preparation process, in clearing forest areas, and in fighting against plants that overrun pastures. However, fire has also negative effects when it gets out of control. This article examines the costs produced by the use of fire in the Amazon. The difference between intentional and accidental fires is noted. The results show that an average cost is about 0,2 % of the region's GDP during years 1996-1999.
