Abstract:In the paper, a gravity model is used to investigate the extent to which currency barriers (hereafter as: curr-barrs.) explain the border effect (here as: b-eff./b-effs.) puzzle, i.e. the impact of national borders on international trade. The focus is on the two monetary unions of the CFA Franc Zone in West and Central Africa. It is found that these countries display large b-effs., and that curr-barrs. explain from 17 percent to 28 percent of the overall border effect.
