Abstract:Using international panel data from 55 countries over the period of 1995-2008, merging indicators of economic literacy with a large set of macroeconomic and institutional variables, this study shows there to be substantial heterogeneity of financial and economic competence across countries. It is also found that human capital indicators (PISA test) are positively correlated with economic literacy. Moreover, inhabitants of countries with more generous social security systems are generally less literate, which supports the hypothesis of the incentives to acquire economic literacy being related to the amount of resources available for private accumulation.
