Abstract:In order to address the evolution of supply chain (henceforth as: s-c.) contracts, this study combines theories from organizational and neo-institutional literatures. Based on a longitudinal case study of the Norwegian State Railways, it is examined how firms move through the phases in an inter-organisational process of s-c. contracts evolution. It is also dealt with how firms can collaborate to ensure efficiency and equity in the contractual relationship. It is found that inefficient and inequitable initial contracts can occur, partly because of the cognitive shortcomings in human decision-making processes revealing themselves early in the arrangement before trust building and learning can cumulate. It is reveal how parties can renegotiate to a more equitable and efficient s-c. contract.
