Abstract:Organizations use strategic issue management systems to enchance their capacity to adapt. Despite increasing prominence, very little is known about the design and use of these systems. Typologies of the forms of strategic issue management systems can take and functions they can serve are presented. It is described how pressures imposed by different context affect both the form and function of strategic issue management systems. Implications for theory and practice are also discussed. The multiple and critical functions served by these systems provide a compelling rationale for research.
