Abstract:During the 1970s intellectuals, government bureaucrats and others had become highly critical of the role of democratic capitalism in their countries. A series of incidents, widely publicized in the world media, called into questions the legitimacy of the global corporation. These events ranged from Lockheed's unauthorized payment to ranking Japanese officials to International Telephone and Telegraph Corporation's alleged attempts to overthrow the democratically elected Allende government in Chile. The outcome: greater public controll over the multinational corporating. Acting collectively, nation-states heightened their surveillance of global companies.
