Abstract: | Problems of formulating and implementing the technology side of product strategy for small-to-medium-sized companies are examined. Some aspects of products portfolio analysis are highlighted. A framework is developed helping the study of technology strategy and technological change within the context of product history. Four levels of technological change are identified: minor improvements; major enhancement; new, related technology; new unrelated technology. Three case studies are described. The research suggests that developing a distinctive competence in a core technology is critical to the long-term growth of technology-based firms. Strategic conclusions are drawn to support managers in innovation. |
