Abstract:Although the bright lights of the big city have not entirely lost their glitter, many companies find that rural living can be good for business. The newest entrepreneurs in the USA, like the visionary eccentrics before them, are convinced that fledgling business can be run effectively from beyond the fringe. Executives cite three important advantages: lower operating costs, superior life-styles leading to higher productivity, and better integration of modern technology. Lessons for urbanites and common features of small town firms are analyzed.
