Abstract: | Higher costs and tougher competition are bringing business and academia closer together and prompting schools to focus on real-world industrial problems. Now even smaller companies can get their share of the research action. The universities also have a lot to gain by working closer with industry. Students receive hands-on understanding of real industrial challenges without having to sacrifice the learning environment of school. Meanwhile, the schools benefit by receiving monetary grants or hardware and software donations from high-tech suppliers. A lot of examples are presented. Further explanations for the closer ties between academia and industry are provided. |
