Abstract:The challenge to innovating is in the origination of new ideas, yet time is at the core of an innovation's success. Companies that have significantly reduced their innovation time have different patterns of innovating and competing than do those that have not focused on time. Slower competitors expend their efforts seeking only the major breakthroughs, while fast innovators plan for comparatively less improvement with each new product introduction but introduce new products much more frequently. Before a company can become a fast innovator, its management has to develop and embrace a new philosophy of organizing around time.
