Abstract:Household electricity use is more efficient in the late 1980s than in the early 1970s. Improvements in the efficiency of new homes, water heaters, electric appliances and lighting, changes in the use of existing appliances, later heating habits and insulation added to homes and water heaters all contributed to increased efficiency. Higher electricity prices and changed perceptions about the importance of using electricity more efficiently are the most important reasons why these changes occurred, though policies helped in a few important places. An enormous saving potential remains compared to the average new system/model/household to today: 75 p.c. reduction in household lighting etc.
