Abstract:The market for wine in Spain includes still wines, sparkling wines and champagne, fortified wines. Retail sales of wine totalled Ptas 229 billion in 1991, a decline of 0.8p.c. over 1990, and a decline of 5.8p.c.in real terms. The largest market sector is table wines , although it is declining at a faster rate than the overall market. Quality wines /VCPRD/ is the second largest and fastest growing sector. Sales of red still wines remain the highest, 54p.c.The volume of production far exceeds the volume of consumption and exports. Per capita consumption of wines fell by over 20p.c. between 1987 and 1991. Low-alcohol wines are being introduced into the market. Tables of production and consumption data of wines are presented.
