Abstract:The authors begin this article by briefly summarizing the history of labour's stance on trade issues and the reasons why it would rationally oppose the lowering of trade barriers. Relevant aspects of the NAFTA debate are explained and the final vote modelled with a two stage logistic regression. The results suggest that representatives were indeed more likely to vote against the NAFTA if their state contained significant labour opposition to free trade. When these economic interests are held constant, Democrats still deserted their president, confirming the continuing shift of the party away from free trade.
