Abstract:This essay analyzes the impact of the drive towards economic integration in North America on the economies and societies of the English-speaking Caribbean. In the first section it establishes an overview of the economic dependency of their economies on the industrialized countries of North America, particularly the USA. In particular, a focus is placed on the consequences of the Caribbean Basin Initiative. The Second Section considers the likely consequences of the NAFTA on the Caribbean and it is argued that besides a few new opportunities, this new trade arrangement is likely to further marginalize the region. Following this, the article briefly describes the current challenges which the new Free Trade Area of the Americas (FTAA) will pose for the Caribbean.
