Abstract:This theoretical article deals with the specific conceptions of solidarity (henceforth as: sldrty.) that the different forms of insurance practice produce. Particular focus is on the distinction btw. 'chance sldrty.' and 'subsidizing sldrty.'. The key questions are: What kinds of conceptions of sldrty. are built in the insurance technology? And how are the limits of sldrty. defined and justified in different forms of insurance?
It is also questioned what makes insurance special among risk technologies? It is the particular way in which it links sldrty. and technical rationality. When taking out an insurance, one participates in the risk pool within which each member is reciprocally responsible for others' risks. The combination of technical controllability and sldrty. has made insurance a successful tool for governing welfare societies during the 20th century. Herein, it is argued that the connection btw. insurance and sldrty. is not limited to social welfare structures, but is evident as to private insurance, as well.
