Abstract:This article indicates that the capacity of a multinational company (MNC) to create value in a foreign direct investment (FDI) can be due to the use of an alternative proprietary asset: the skills and management expertise that are gained through the accumulation of many forms of foreign experience. In the sample of 305 FDIs, it is found that Japanese MNCs that had experience in a host country indicated greater abnormal returns in a FDI, especially where environmental risk was high.
