Abstract:Expert systems can at present be described as high profile. The experience with expert system development is at variance with most of the published literature. The views lead to consideration of expert systems as a means of improving a particular production-control function within a large industrial organization, a domain where operational research has had little success. Applying expert systems methodology to this function is argued to prove far from straightforward. The need is seen for a problem-driven approach to the development of expert systems within these domains. Such an approach is proposed, an approach which relies heavily on the use of soft systems methodology.
