Abstract:There has been some doubt whether the character of Bordeaux's most powerful brand asset be harmed if corporate holding of its vineyards becomes the norm. Until recently the long-established family-run merchant firms of the Chartrons not only sold the stuff at home and abroad: they were also financing the crop by buying the previous vintage and "raising" it to maturiry. Demand for Bordeaux wine is insatiable and even at current high prices, buyers queue up. Discriminatory tax laws may make it impossible for vineyards to stay in family hands. The largest fine-wine producing area in the world should continue to act as a commercial melting pot, accomodating speculators alongside uncompromising long-term craftsmen.
