Abstract: | A knowledge-based approach is discussed to production planning, a managerial statement of long-term requirements, including the process of establishing production rates, work force levels, inventories on-hand, and days of overtime for product families, which satisfy marketing requirements as well as certain financial and policy constraints, as a possible alternative to traditional operational research methods. The production planning state-space, use of common planning constraints and heuristic procedures are described as well as a prototype of a knowledge-based system at the top end of a production planning system that develops production plans for one product family. |
