Abstract:Gender representation is only one façade of gendered disadvantage (here as: g-d.)in engineering, as complex forms of g-d. occur in social, cultural, psychological and economic layers of life. This article draws on comparative and historical data, and a qualitative study with interviews and a questionnaire survey which generated over 600 completed responses from male and female engineering students in Turkey. It is found that linear formulations of g-d. and gendered prejudice in engineering study are insufficient to account for the complexity of influences on career choice and their gendered outcomes.
