Abstract: | Arguments are provided that it is possible to advise firms on how to hedge against foreign exchange risks only if one has detailed knowledge of the competitive environment they work in. The models used to illustrate this point, are highly simplified in a variety of ways. Only very simple hedging strategies are analyzed. No intertemporal considerations are included. Even these simple models suffice, however, to show that the problem is of major interest. To illustrate this, firms' hedging requirements in a number of different industrial organizations models are compared (in particular the Cournot-model, a model with conjectural variations, price taking firms and monopolistic competition). |
