Abstract:The escalating dispute in the east German metalworking sector is calling into question the whole tradition of industry-wide bargaining. With the employers refusing to revoke their unilateral cancellation of the sectoral pay agreement, the IG Metall engineering union is considering the "strategic option" of forcing individual firms to negotiate company agreements. However, neither the unions nor the employers' associations want to see a break-up of sectoral bargaining, although, the severity of the economic climate in the east is testing the system to its limits.
