Abstract:The author defines two basic concepts of ownership that have been supported by the Slovenian economists during the last century. The liberal concept of private ownership, which dominated until the Great Depression, was gradually replaced by the view that private ownership should be restricted in accordance with the principles of Christian Socialism. The revolutionary period immediately after 1945 was characterized by the establishment of state ownership, which was later transformed into the so called social ownership. The latter was combined with self-management, a specific strand of socialist practice, which despite its originality proved inefficient from the economic viewpoint.Since the break-down of socialist economic systems at the end of the 1980s Slovenia has experienced a revival of private ownership, which is expected to improve economic efficiency and also to be socially acceptable.
