Abstract:The tinplate industry was chosen for the research reported since it was known to have a comprehensive seniority system with a long history. Origins of promotion by seniority in this industry are examined. The later developments of the system are summarized. The operation of the seniority system is described. The advantages of internal promotion to external recruitment are shown. Some disadvantages are listed. A number of pressures on management to adopt both an internal labor market and a seniority-based promotion system are identified, particularly in the case of white-collar employees. The prerequisites to the successful operation of a seniority promotion system are listed and analyzed.
