Abstract:Widespread truck safety problems involve poor equipment that is poorly maintained /especially brakes/ and operated too often by not necessarily qualified drivers who have been at the wheel for to many hours. The responsibility of the Federal Highway Administration's office and of inspection teams in each state is stressed. Resources to improve the situation are increasing. The new legislation on the field of national licensing standards will help to solve the problem of unqualified truck drivers. An automated National Driver Register will prevent the licensing of drivers with suspended or revoked licenses from other states.
