Abstract:This paper concentrates on entrepreurial ambition of Jardine Matheson & Company's (the oldest of the Hong Kong trading company) founders William Jardine and James Matheson, with emphasis on the importance of reputation to legitimacy and growth of the trading firm, and the role played by the founders in shaping the legal environment for trade with China. In this study Edith Penrose's Theory of the Growth of the Firm is used.
