Abstract: | Payment cards are now at the centre of the banks' strategies to build relationships with their customers. Lloyds was the first clearing bank to set up its own estate agency chain. It was the first bank to introduce an interest-bearing current account. And it was the first bank to gain membership of both card payment systems, Visa and Mastercard. This bid for "duality", as it came to be called, ushered in a period of intense competition between the card issuers. |
