Abstract:This case study illustrates the need to integrate central direction with creative, autonomous learning communities to achieve competitive leadership through innovation. This paper uses an example of strategic innovation at a traditional large corporation - operating in the extremely competitive field of broadband mobile Internet services - to explain how heterogeneous strategic organizations may encounter these paradoxes and yet achieve radical transformation. The paper provides an overview of a framework for building integrative competences in large corporations. It then uses DoCoMo, the largest mobile telecommunications carrier in Japan, to describe the achievement of strategic innovation.
