Abstract:Experience of burnout and success in the professional and private lives of engineers are explored. Gender differences in the interrelationship between work and private life and its effect on feelings of burnout, satisfaction and success are revealed. Male engineers are better able to integrate work success with private life than female engineers. The results are discussed in the light of a proposition to view burnout in a person- and environment-fit framework. Implications are drawn for career consultants and human resource managers in organizations relying on technical expertise.
