Abstract:Little integration has occured between the macrolevel research on salary differentials and the microlevel research on evaluation bias, although both contribute to the understanding of the persistence of gender inequality in wages. The research background is highlighted. It is proposed that task characteristics provide a bridge between these research streams. A framework is presented including variables of subjectivity, firm type, task/job sex type, task uncertainty, task variability, task complexity, task interdependence and others. The performance appraisal instrument as an important meditating variable is introduced.
