Abstract:While the idea of profit sharing has existed for over a century, the practice of profit sharing is not dominant in Western countries. How profit sharing actually affects employee work effort and productivity, is still an open question. The relationship of profit sharing plans to productivity is explored. A discussion of the theory of profit sharing is followed by a literature review. Subsequently, there is a description of dataset followed by the results of the empirical tests. A variety of test results are analyzed to answer the basic question whether profit sharing plans and Employee Stock Ownership plans (ESOPs) are associated with higher productivity.
