Abstract:There are three sets of "facts" to look at: what has happened to productivity, what has happened to investment in R&D and science, and what has happened to the relationship between them. Sometime in the late 1960s measured productivity growth in the United States started to slow down. A number of discordant facts are important for an understanding of what happened. The productivity -growth decline in many other countries was larger, absolutely, than in the US, and there it was not associated with declined in R&D investment.
