Abstract:Air France, the national air carrier, is in a difficult economic situation, struggling with operating losses and debts. The new president of the company worked out a plan aimed at increasing productivity by 30 p.c. over three years , involving a great reduction of workforce and different changes in working practices. He put the plan to a referendum among the 40,000-strong workforce and gained an overwhelming vote of approval. Much interest was taken by commentators in the method by which the plan had been introduced asking if the use of workforce referenda might be an important innovation in French industrial relations.
