Abstract: | This article presents an experimental investigation of a variety of group incentive programs. The article examines simple revenue sharing and target-based systems such as profit sharing or productivity gainsharing, and tournament-based and monitoring schemes. Some important findings are made: the history of a group and its performance in the past is an important predictor of how that group will perform when a new incentive program is introduced. Evidence was discovered that one effective way to increase group effort is to introduce some within-firm competition between work units performing the same task; setting up an intrafirm team tournament. Targets established endogenously on the basis of relative performance do better at stimulating group output than those that are externally stipulated. |
