Abstract:This study finds a wide dispersion of labor productivity across companies, based on a sample of UK firms. Some dispersion is transitory: amongst surviving firms there is regression towards the mean and dispersion falls over time. There are significant differences between sectors in the extent of dispersion. This could be explained by the greater competence, for example. A role of competition is also suggested by the finding that surviving firms which were initially below the mean improve their performance more rapidly than those initially above the mean.
