Abstract: | This article considers the question which party benefits to which extent from increases in labor productivity based on process innovations. To answer this question it is of great importance to assume that the negotiations between the employer and the employee about splitting the resulting surplus are held against a jointly accepted bargaining set. Depending on the restrictions of the bargaining set, pareto-optimal or (merely) pareto-superior outcomes may arise. The locus of all feasible pareto-optimal and/or pareto-superior outcomes is called the contract-curve. Both its poles mark the starting positions of the parties in the negotiation process, its course shows the - sometimes peculiar - way to compromise solutions. |
