Abstract:The author answers the question whether firms do learn from their exporting experience. In recent years a number of empirical studies have focused around this question. This paper will provide evidence consistent with a different hypothesis. Divergent results may be explained by the fact that the former group of studies uses a dichotomous measure of export behavior which does not capture the intensity of involvement in foreign activities, unlike Kraay's work where the measure of exporting experience is the share of foreign sales on total turnover. First the paper provides a quick review of the relevant theoretical and empirical literature then the paper describes the sample and data used. In the following sections the paper goes into the econometric results and concludes.
