Abstract: | In order to examine the impact of team-based incentives, an experiment with rich data from personnel records and management information systems (MIS) is exploited. Using a triple difference design, the incentive scheme is shown to have an impact on team performance, even with quite large teams. It is examined whether this effect was due to workers' increased effort or strategic task reallocation (here as: reallcn). It is found that the provision of financial incentives did raise individual performance. Yet, managers were also found to disproportionately reallocate efficient workers to the incentivised tasks. This reallcn. is shown to be the more important contributor to the overall outcome. |
