| Abstract: | The paper investigates the effects of pre-existing ties and relationships on initial group performance. A study of 42 teams was conducted to examine the issue. The findings indicate that the density of pre-existing work relationships and friendships is directly associated with better initial performance by group. Furthermore, the density of the pre-existing relationships moderates the density of emerging relationships in a new team. The team productivity is affected by the degree to which new ties are based on the old ones. |
