Abstract: | A relatively dense network created in the late 19th century among the large public corporations is examined for the period from 1896 to 1938 in Germany and the United States (U.S). Corporate (as: corp.) networks served many purposes, e.g. as a medium of self-control in managerially run companies, as an instrument of bank control in capital-intensive companies, and as ways to regulate competition in the mass production age. In Germany, the density and centralization of the corp. network increased parallel to the growing degree of cartelization within the economy (cooperative capitalism). In the U.S., the density of the corp. network decreased in relation to the extent that antitrust laws were enforced (competitive capitalism). |
