Abstract:This paper explores the impact of socio-structural variables on the extent to which professional women (herein as: w.) perceive a w.'s network as a collective strategy for status enhancement. Based on a survey among network members (n=166), it is suggested that the extent to which w. support and consider a network to benefit w. as a collective is dependent on perceptions of whether individual mobility is possible and beliefs that organizational conditions will improve for w. in the future. In particular, the network is less likely to be perceived as a collective vehicle for change when individual advancement is possible and status improvement in the future is unlikely etc.
