Abstract:Consumer spending in the UK is now confirmed as having begun to grow again but there are some fears that this recovery has already started to peter out. This forecast looks at the short term prospects for the consumer sector over the rest of this year. The basic conclusion is that, although the economy as a whole may grow steadily through the remainder of the decade, policy will be designed to reduce the share consumer spending in total demand. This implies that the growth of consumer spending will fall far short of its performance in the 1980s.
