Abstract:The key issue dominating the prospects for consumer spending over the next three years is the impact of the tax increases, first announced by Norman Lamont. These taxes, which include the extension of VAT to heating and lighting , have only been observed on such a large scale three times in UK post-war economic history. Already there are signs that consumers are becoming aware of the impact of these tax rises and are cutting back on their purchases. In this economic review it is considered whether the economic recovery is robust enough to withstand these tax increases, or whether we are likely to see a further downturn in the consumer sector.
